AudioWorklet now available in Chrome 66

Google’s implementation of the long-awaited AudioWorklet part of the Web Audio specification is now available in Chrome stable with the release of Chrome 66. I think we’ll start seeing more experimentation now it is available to Chrome users without having to enable feature flags. The Firefox implementation is being actively worked on too. You can track its progress on bugzilla.

There are so many amazing Web Audio demos shared on Here are some I’ve seen in the last few weeks.

  • Going Forward by Adam Chambers uses Web GL, the voice synthesizer API and access to your web cam to create an ambient experience.
  • Latent Cycles by Tero Parviainen is an experiment in generative music using the Google Magenta MusicVAE model and tensorflow.js.
  • Video Music by Jake Albaugh uses the average hue from your camera to change the chords in an arpeggiator.

Oppen Do Down

Jim Andrews has ported a piece of interactive music he wrote in 2000 using Adobe Director to the Web Audio API. Oppen Do Down is a barbershop/scat-style composition which gives the listener control over the layering of voices. As well as enjoying the composition you can also learn from Jim’s experiences of building it in two companion blog posts.


Back in issue 49 I featured Ben Hall’s library virtual-audio-graph. It’s a library for declaratively manipulating the Web Audio API by storing its “virtual state”. If you’re familiar with how react and other modern JS frameworks use a virtual DOM for a similar purpose, the principles will be familiar to you.

The API has changed quite a lot since issue 49, and Ben has written a comprehensive guide to working with the library. If you’re looking for a way to manage the complexity of large audio graphs, it’s worth taking some time to study this library.

WAC2018 keynote speakers and submission deadline

The keynote speakers for this year’s Web Audio Conference have been announced. I’m really excited to hear these talks from Ruth John and Chris Rogers in Berlin in the autumn. You have until April 23rd to submit a talk too.

Web of audio visualization devices

The in-development WebUSB standard provides some exciting opportunities to connect hardware devices to the web platform. In this blog post Ashish Dubey uses WebAudio to analyse incoming audio, sends messages over WebUSB to an arduino, which in turn lights an array of LEDs.

fluX: A nano API for generative music in the browser

fluX is a purpose-built API that runs in the browser and can be used to generate music. The library has support for generating sequences of notes, specifying their pitch and volume and has support for built-in software synths and external MIDI devices.

Noisy Pink Bubbles

Noisy Pink Bubbles is a “bouncing ball synth experiment”. Its author David explains:

Users can add new balls to the canvas, add “bumpers” and design a scene. By playing the keyboard you can adjust pitches and arpeggiate chords, for example “C” is C major, and “c” is C minor, and so on. So as the bubbles bounce, you can type C, G, a, F, C to “play” the bubbles. Layout starts random, but the canvas can be cleared to design scenes with any kind of rhythm and syncopation.
