Leimma & Apotome - Unleashing Microtonality

KHYAM ALLAMI / COUNTERPOINT

As part of the CTM 2021: Transformation festival, composer Khyam Allami has collaborated with Counterpoint studio to create this pair of browser-based, microtonal experiences. Leimma is a playground for exploring microtonal tuning systems, and Apotome is a generative performance space in which to compose with them. The Wire has an interview with the composer and Counterpoint studio member Tero Parviainen discusses the development of the applications in more detail.

Chaoscillator

GILES RICHARD GREENWAY

Two oscillators, one for the left audio channel and one for the right, have their frequencies controlled by iteratively solving one of three chaotic differential equations - after Lorrentz, Chua or Rossler. There's a small loudspeaker icon under the visualisation which starts the sound.

JZZ - MIDI library for Node.js and web-browsers

JAZZ SOFT

JZZ.js allows sending, receiving and playing MIDI messages in Node.js and all major browsers in Linux, MacOS and Windows. Some features are available on iOS and Android devices.

React Sequencer

JACK CARRICK

A drum/synth sequencer written using React. There's a lot of different ways of structuring an application like this, so you might find the source code (which also uses Tone.js) instructive.

Sounds of a QAnon chat room

STUART A. THOMPSON

An interesting and daring use of audio in the New York Times piece. Field recordings from an online audio chatroom are synchronised with highlighted text in the article.
